A “galea” was a helmet worn by Roman soldiers (the legionaries). At times, Gladiators also wore a bronze “galea” with a face mask and a decoration. Some of these helmets used by the legionaries had a crest holder. They were usually made of plumes or horse hair. While the crests are mostly shown in red, they probably occurred in other colors, such as yellow, purple and black, or a combination of these colors. Over the years, a warrior’s helmet has become a symbol of strength and power.
The “fleur-de-lis”is a stylized lily that is used as a decorative design or symbol. In French, “fleur” means "flower", and “lis” means "lily". Fleur-de-lis is an ancient symbol that has long been associated with French royalty. Very often, Fleur-de-lis symbolizes service to others, duty to God, beauty and peace. Many of the saints in France are often depicted with a lily, most prominently St. Joseph.
